It does look like it could be Crenicichla saxatilis, could you get a close up of the head? Particularly of the suborbital mark?

Gorgeous fish no doubt about it! They are definitely awesome as well, you'll soon be soon hooked you'll be setting up tanks just for them! :D

+1 on what Ray said about the tetras...
Thanks Peanut, i will definatly try getting a better picture once he will let me near enough!

^^ looks like you have a new tank "manager" hahaha running the show in there already.
The GT is still beating down on him when he gets too much attitude :)
Other than that yeah he basically runs it in there :P

Nice! It definitely strongly looks like Crenicichla saxatilis, possibly a female at that. Generally the males will get the spangles, the females won't as much, plus the 'bar/stripe' that goes from the gill plate to the eye is edged in that silver gold lining on the females. :) Just gotta see if 'she' gets a pink belly, and any sign of white in the dorsal.

It COULD also be Crenicichla frenata. . . do you know the collection area or where it generally came from?

She has tons of red/pink on her belly now! :) So i guess this makes her a female?

The vendor said it was from Surinam, and this was the only one left from the shipment, as it was too agressive to be with any tankmates.

Now though, she is completely mellow. She has not been picking fights AT ALL with ANYONE, however all those tetra's you see in the vid are all gone except 2 that hide behind the FX5 intake, lol.

I will lookup those frenata and see if i can find similarities

Nice Pike! Saxatilis group creni's can breed prodigiously given the right tank set-up & conditions. I'll check and see what types are in Surinam.... males can be a chunky 10" size. Good luck with your Lady!!!

~ Crenicichla are the most facinating and incredible fish to keep ~ ENJOY ! ! ! !
