So I bought my first piranha. After researching the species that the LFS said I was purchasing, I'm not sure if this piranha is that species. So I'm posting up a few pictures and I would appreciate it if you guys could help me identify him.

He/She is about 5 1/2-6 inches long. He's covered in spots which you can't really see in these pics. He's mean as hell although I guess that comes with the genus. Sorry about the quality of the pics:

it looks like a young serrasalmus rhombeus, the anal fin is a little more yellow than usual and his gill is a little red so possibly sanchezi? but im leaning toward rhom. why didnt your lfs id him?

Yah, its a black rhom.

Once again.. if you arent 100% sure of an answer then why post? everyone makes it very hard to get knowledgeable info on piranha.. we lose countless mebers to pfury and the like..
Is there anyway that you can supply clearer non blurry pictures.. i am leaning toward marginatus, but i can be mistaken.. where was this specimen collected? if you didnt get if from a store that specializes in piranha then they may not know.. The marginatus is abundant in Paraguay-Paraná river basin: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. SO this may be a defining factor.. But as far as my expertise goes im looking at a marginatus not a rhom..

yeah I actually tried pfury to begin with. They said rhom or sanchezi. That's why when I posted here I left the sold as species unstated. I wanted an unbiased opinion. I have been perusing OPEFE and it looks like the RIO ARAGUAIA (Brazil) Morph or possibly a Sanchezi. It also looks a lot like a marginatus. I'm not sure. Perhaps it is indeed a marginatus. I hope it's not a rhom because I'd need to upgrade tanks to 100g or so for life. Not really looking to do that for a while.

the only thing about it being a rhom is OPEFE states that the common characteristic of rhoms no matter what the regional variant is a red eye, my dude doesn't have a red eye...
