Hi guys and gals, Well i've been reading the threads on the forum for ages, so at last I thought I would post a thread. I have kept fish for years, and currently run a large community tank 400 litres, with Tin Foils, Mono's Jarapuris, Gold Severums, and Fire Eels. Put I have had a hidden passion for Arowanas ever since I was a child, they are amazing fish, and in my opinion the most elegant.
I was in my local fish shop 2 weeks ago, and they had 2 tiny little 10cm Silver Arowanas, so I bought them. At the moment they are in a 3 foot, 225 liter tank, but my goal is to get them into a 8 x 2 x 2 around christmas time, just don't tell the wife! they have settled in really well, they are eating Hikari Gold Mini Pellets, 3 each a day. I have put some Corys in the tank as well to make sure they eat any left over food, but not to harass the Arowanas.
These Arowanas are as amazing as I had always imagined, they have already grown about 1cm in the last 2 weeks.
Just a few bits of advice I wondered if you guys could give me:

1 Do you think an 8 x 2 x 2 tank will be big enough for them, I can't really fit a bigger tank in the room, without removing the dinning room table!

2 Will the 2 Arowanas be alright together long term?

It was good talking to you guys, and I look forward to many more conversations in the future,

Mike.

First of welcome, even if you have been reading for a while... you gotta get atleast 5 posts so you can check out people's pics... and we'd love to see some of your setup also :) IMO An 8 x 3.5 footprint would probably be large enough for when they bet bigger... eventually it will be tuff for them to turn in the 2ft width.

Hi and welcome to MFK fellow Englander. I think you might just need a wider tank with silver aros, more than more length. Watch out when they get a bit bigger, or they may try to snack on the cories, and they don't make good feeders. Anyway, good luck, and welcome!

Wellcome ! 2 Aro's is impossible in the not so long run. Either one, or more than 5, imo.

welcome and keep those posts coming.

Hi, thanks for all the advice, and its amazing that so many people from all around the world have such a similar passion.

I think I will definetly try to get a wider tank, as I can see it will help with them turning, as for the Corys, they are only in there as a temporary measure, and as they get bigger they will be transfered to my other community tank. I think I will try the 2 together first and see how they get on, if they don't see eye to eye, I will then have to make a decision as to what to do.

Thanks for the advice,

Mike.

welcome mike...

first of all remove any corys from the aro tank for your arowanas will die wen they try to eat them

second sell one of the aros or get some more for only 2 i'm affraid it's a chance in a million;)

third show some pics please:D

I see a lot less of a problem with the tank width than most everyone else. One of the most facinating things about an aro is their ability to almost bend in half to turn....plus it's going to be quite a while before they outgrow a 8x2x2. they do get large but your talking years ...not months. Your situation and room may well change by then. As far as having two of them...that, as has already been mentioned, is problemmatic at best. as they get older and reach the 12" mark or so they become intollerant of their own species. Granted you might have been lucky enough to pick up a compatable pair but I wouldn't count on it. One or many is the general rule of thumb so watch them carefully when they get between 12" and 14".
