a 2 inch clownfish is debated over whether or not it can live in a 12 gallon.. the grouper is a no go..
i really wouldn't start one in less than a 40-55 unless it was a quaranteen

if it's only 12 gallons, why not try a mantis shrimp?

if you could find a pygmy frogfish im sure that could work if you got a small skimmer for him..

if you had one of the 24, 28, or 29 sizes you could have gotten like a dwarf lion or something.. but 12 gallons is just WAY too small

keep in mind that its a growout. People growout pbass in a 10gallon tank, why cant I grow out a panther grouper or lion fish who is 1" in a 12gallon?

this is your first SW tank?

in the time the grouper takes to out grow the 12 gallon.. you may as well have waited to get the 180

not my first saltwater tank, its my first in this new house. Its easier to grow out the grouper in a 12gallon tank, to ensure that hes not sick and to get him eating.

and it's just as easy to sell the 12 gallon buy a 29-55 starter kit keept it as a quaranteen...

im just saying I wouldn't.. it's not like i can stop you or anything

Thats true, He'd only be in there for about 2 weeks before he outgrew it.. i guess its just worthless to put him in there, when I'm gona have to move him out soon. I'll just save my time and stick with your advice.

alright back to the setup.

I'm thinking some live rock with a couple corals, mushrooms, etc..

sure..

some fish you might want to look into:

watchman gobies
firefish
clown gobies
jawfish
grammas
pseudochromis

look around and find small fish that you like (2-3''<)
and if you ask about them we can give you advise

appreciate it. I just miss my old panther grouper, and lion fish. so I figured if I got this tank setup for them. it would motivate me more to get another tank :D

your story makes no sense, you said you have never had a saltwater tank but now your talking about having alot of saltwater tanks, large ones at that. Sketchy

and for a nano tank you could have some nice invertabrates, and basically everything big gourmi said

i find the absense of a tank more motivating :D

still get the 180 :headbang2

my apologies, I didn't realize I said I've never owned a saltwater fish tank, I was meaning to say I have yet to have one sense I've moved.

I had 3 in my old house, but when moving I had to sell them.

I mostly keep freshwater, but I'm starting to lean more towards salt water.
