Since the tank was used for lobster, I think that the sump is full of bio media because all of the foam pads were in the overflow. With the mechanical filtration being outside of the sump, I wouldn't need to access it.
 
That sponge is gonna hold in a lot of nitrates, and I'd at least run Purigen or chemi pure. I think you should disconnect that sump and add a different one for sure. The one on it now has little use for you, your biological filter is your live rock and sand that's just gonna hold in your nitrates having sponges. And once they get clogged slow your filter down

I was afraid that I would have to do that. At least I already have the pump and overflow.
 
Yeah I think it's best you switch out your sump, nitrates will be a really serious problem in your system eventually. Your zoanthanids will eventually stop opening up and your toadstools and finger corals won't open up fully then start deteriorating.
