Just bought this little guy the other day. Was wondering what I should feed him for the best health/fastest growth?

I don't like using feeders for small fish. If you can get him on pellets, that is the best. Otherwise, bloodworms, earthworms (chopped), blackworms, strips of tilapia fillet, chopped market shrimp (deshelled), chopped freeze dried krill

obviously the best food would be specialist arowana pellets (ie. hikari floating carnivore) which is basically designed for arowanas....but its also very expensive :)

Make sure you don't power feed him with large meals...keep the meals small and frequent and he'll be over a foot in no time.

Usually at that size its good to start him out on floating pellets, small crickets and frozen bloodworms. Feeders at his size is risky. Mine is 23" and he eats anything, even lettuce. Good luck.

why not power feed?

I'm assuming this is directed to me.

I'm talking about not feeding until the aro is about to burst. That is not good for the fish, especially silvers. I've seen a few die from being fed too much food in one sitting. I bulk my aros up quick on a "power feeding" schedule, I just make sure to feed multiple meals throughout the the day.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I bought this guy instead of a 13" silver at my LFS because I really wanted to watch him grow. Although the 13" was a steal at $50.

As far as pellets, I've seen him taking them in when I'm feeding the small cichlids in the tank, but he seems to spit them right back out. I guess he's picky.

I think you made the right choice...there is nothing better than watching your aro grow into a ]V[onster.

That's a good sign that he's doing that...he's recognizing the pellets as food. Just give it time and he'll be putting down pellets quicker than you can buy them. :D
