Other people have reported that is what happens, but it depends on what exactly they are made of. Also, get rid of the copper scrubbies. Some will be ok but you don't want any in with the other media. Copper is used on the hulls of marine vessels to prevent growth of sea barnacles and sea weed. It is not a suitable media for growing bacteria either. It is not a strong bacteriacide but it has trace amounts of silver ions in it. Silver is an excellent bacteriacide. You can find the plastic scrubbies at most dollar stores.
