Whenever you add new fish your tank WILL have amonnia in it, might be miniscule but youll still get at least .25 on your test kit.

Where did he say he added new fish? Must've missed it.

x2 im really sick of people saying "an established tank will never have ammonia" there are points in time during feeding or perhaps a large fecal movement that your tank will contain partial ammonia until your bio bacteria absorbs and metabilises. especially with large fish

0.25 ammonia is not a problem and if you think it is please post daily pics of your ammonia after feedings im really interested in see'ing someone who has never had 0.25 ammonia in an established tank. thats the point... it will be neutrallized by bacteria

I wonder if the "gill flukes" might have been a reaction to ammonia levels.
I'd just keep tabs on the water to make sure the ammonia doesn't raise again and start treatment for ick ( easily treated if caught early).

Even in most "established" tanks as you call it buddy there are dead spots where water doesnt circulate that DO have amonnia...

.25 ammonia may not be an issue for healthy fish but his fish are sick and any added stress will further his issues. This is why people recommend light feedings and large scale water changes when treating sick fish. Not saying it doesn't ever occur, but sick and stressed fish need all the help they can get. Any added stress can prove fatal.

Do you really think he took a water sample from a dead spot? Once again, we are not discussing a " healthy" system. His fish are sick and dying. Clean water is the best medicine for his situation till the root cause can be determined.

I never said he did :), just helping you understand since it seems you dont know much

I won't go any further

Let's not start turning this thread into a 'do you have a dead spot' thread, OK? Any way, the good things to do when fish are sick are to do water changes = but make sure your water is close to tank temp before putting it in. Also, when using fish Meds, ppl some times forget that you need to at least put in an air stone, for increased aeration. Most Meds say this right on the bottle. Trying to find out what sickened or stressed the fish to begin with may help too. When I first joined here, I remember one guy had found out that one of the aquarium ornaments in the tank was decomposing, another noticed that mold had started to grow on the wood in there. Good Luck with your fish, I really hope they get healthy again.

All I need to understand on this thread is his fish are sick and IMO any added stress will make his issues worse. True, heat and salt is the best ich treatment, but debating the prescence of ammonia in dead spots, or it being present when adding fish that he never said he added in the first place, is futile at best. IMO .25 ammonia is too much for fish with ich, much less ich and flukes. Heat, salt and the cleanest possible water is the only way I've successfully treated ich. I've never had flukes so I can't comment.

Once again, if he did add new fish and I missed it, I apologize. That is most likely where the problems started in the first place. But thanks for helping me understand what I already know.... ;)

And I won't go any further either since I have nothing more to add. Sorry to the op. I wish you the best for your fish! Good luck
