My fish died :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do about 15 gallons a week..I'll try checking the water soon, the tank isn't at my house so it might take a little while for me to get over there

A 20% wc every week for a 75g that is overstock is no where near enough IMO. Your nitrates are probably severely high and I would definitely contribute the death to poor water conditions if the nitrates are as high as I would expect them to be in a an overstocked 75g w/ weekly 20% wc.

20 gallons!!!!! Good grief, yup I know why the knife died. Dude on a regular stocked tank, 50% a week is normal, on an over stocked tank..... 50% a day might be more appropriate.

Your DOC's, and nitrates are going to be at toxic levels, your pH has probably plummeted and the KH is going to be so low it might not be readable.

With the KH gone, the pH goes bonkers and *poof* fish start dying.

You are going to need to do daily 50% changes for a few days even with out that knife in there to bring the water paramaters back to a healthy state. Then start doing 50% weekly.

DOC's are Dissolved Organic Compounds. They are the summation of all carbon based molecules released by living things from Carbon dioxide to, hormones, pheromones and dead skin cells. They comprise such a huge variety of compounds that there is no one test for all of them, you would have to test for each one independently and add them up to get a total. Excess hormones and pheromones in the water cause all sorts of problems within and between the species sending out and receiving these "chemical messages." Additionally a large number of pathogenic bacteria live and thrive in environments rich in carbon compounds. Traditionally the nitrate test is used as an estimator of DOC's in the water, as they will typically climb together. However using pothos or aquatic plants to reduce the nitrates will mean that the nitrate test is no longer a good estimator of DOC's.

@ kdrun76 Actually, he said 15 gallons. Even lower. :P

Ooooh, okay. So feces from the fish that is caught between gravel that dissolves still wouldn't classify as DOC because it's non organic right? Or would it?

The first letter in DOC is Dissolved. Fecal matter in the gravel is not dissolved, but will leach both DOC's and nitrates as it is broken down by the heterotrophic bacteria that are decomposing the poops into mulm.

Why don't we just wait for the water reading before we start assuming why it died?

I don't agree that 50% wc daily needs to be done. I would say that with that stock, and an Fx5... 50% a week would suffice. But we all can agree that more is better.

But that would all depend.. the tank may not be properly cycled.

50% daily is needed for one week only....to reduce the current numbers.

I'm not assuming anything. As already stated in my post #10 it's just a theory and you would need the readings to really know for sure.

I see. Thanks for the info. Never really discussed DOC.

did I quote you or say that you were assuming? no.

it was a general statement.

post was not about you.
