my fish tank smells

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
rake the sand, maybe pull the fish out and give them a sniff, there was once a lady who washed her favorite betta everyday in the sink to make sure he was clean!

If you overfilter your tank you wont have to worry about stinky water, whats your filtration like?

its 180 gal

30 gal w/d appx 5 gallons of bioballs/some scrubbies-700 gph return

2 ac 110 - say 600 gph between the two

and a cheapo 500 gph canister

so about 10 x turnover

i do weekly 70 % water changes

my stock

1 12'' oscar

3 3-5" jd

2 green tex 2 6-7.5'' 1 3 in

2 3'' firemouths

2 1.5'' clown loaches

1 8'' com pleco (that i saved but i still hate

oh i feed bid
bout 1/2 a tea spoon in the am
and a table spoon at night
of cichlid gold

so i brought in a guest nose and he said........... it smells like prime ...... so maybe all those wc ive been doing is making the smell worse ??
i wish i could post the odor...
but im very careful to not spill the prime any where but in the water... does the water still smell like sulfur normally after using prime?

so i guess i should dtop using it and see if that helps, which is a bummer cause i have a bottle and a half still.

so what should i use instead?

whats the second best prooduct that doesnt smell

I use and love amquel + and I never noticed a smell in my tank ever. I noticed the carnivore pellets them selves stink but I hand feed those one by one to my fish and my tank is still never smelly its there diet staple.
One thing surprisingly not mentioned yet is. Is there a window in your room ? Any ventilation at all ? I visited a fish store once that did not have any ventilation but the front door and the place reeked so bad it made me nauseous. The smell could be coming from the ammonia being processed in the wet dry. Either way a closed off room with a big tank like that the tank is going to have a big impact on the smell of the room. Did you rake the sand for air pockets ?

i couldnt help but to think when reading the title, the good ol,"thats what she said!":ROFL:sorry, its at least good for a laugh.
to help with your problem-clean the sand and do more water changes. If that doesdnt help I suggest breaking down the tank and getting the old sand out to clean it better. It may be stuck in the sand.i fiorget what its called but its a gas that can rise outta the sand from pockets if its too thick of a sand base

90 ml dose (big dose but the same as amqual) for 180 gallons
64 oz is 12 bucks so that means 21 wc per bottle, thats a better price then the prime
i wonder how good it is

or the slightly better deal is a gallon of this ($30.00)
p_167211_30315D.jpg

1 tblespoon for 40 gallons- theres alot of tblespoons in a gallon (51 wc)

so 51 wc for 30$ 59 cents a wc
or 21 for 12$ (63wc for 36) umm (57 cents a wc)

its better now,
it in my living room with lots of ventilation
i did rake the sand
im starting to beleive its the prime but time will tell

amquel
Use 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons of water.
so that means that theres only 5 doses in a 16 oz bottle for my tank
thats a big price increase from prime
I never crunched the numbers to notice. I just know its good :) Not sure if its any better than prime. I used prime since they had the brown bottle with the beige label . Thought id try some others and I liked the amquel. Top fin conditioner was good stuff too. But like I said I never really crunched the numbers. Just got a gallon of amquel dont remember what it cost.
