Just read through this entire thread. Wow. Just wow. An amazing accomplishment that you are with a single fish 20 years. Congrats and thank you so much for sharing. Please continue to keep us updated.
I should probably get some pics or video. But, still going strong. Actually really good and aggressive eater. Still only eating pellets. In a 300 by himself.

So, just as an update. The gar is still alive, and 15 months ago, actually went to live in Ohio with Ohio Fish Rescue people. We moved across the country, and sold all of my aquariums. I see him on their YT channel from time to time, still going strong.
Just found this thread; congrats on your dedication and persistence. A lot of things could have gone wrong in 20 years, so you did an awful lot of things correctly to make it that long. 
Must have been tough to give that fish up. It obviously went to one of the few places that might give it care equivalent to that which you provided.

Thanks! It was a great fish to own, and one I would revisit when I get back into the hobby.
