if you have had him for 11yrs it makes me wonder how old mine is as he is 16-17in

in captivity size (past the first year or so) is not really correlated with age in many cases. your fish at that size could easily just be 1-2 years old. an 11-year old FL gar is pretty rare in the hobby, congrats to the OP for keeping it this long!--

Not to be "that guy," but aren't gars illegal to have in Arizona? If that's the case, then it's not the best idea to discuss the fact that you own one... :screwy:

Technically I dont think he even implied that his gar is in Arizona. He could have a second home in Florida or a myriad other arrangements. It is not illegal for Arizonans to own gars, its just illegal to have them in the state.

Valid point. I had just read the Owning gars illegally: THINK before you post sticky and thought about my previous response while reading this thread.

Thanks. I have actually had him closer to 13 years now. Like I said before, I did not do the best in the early stages, by keeping him in a 55 for so long. But i was young and that is all i had. He is healthy though and no real issues.

Right. Thank you. I really enjoy this fish. Looking to add another perhaps. He has had almost every tankmate imaginable (dovii, tsn, rtc, motoro, pbass, oscars, jd, clown knife, managuense, black aro - wish i never sold some of those and some passed on when my power went out) and has not bothered or been bothered by any that i can think of.

The fx5 and other canister filter do a great job. I have not used feeders in years. He has been eating pellets for the last 9 years at least. Every once in a blue moon a gold fish will be tossed in. But mainly just cichlid pellets or silversides.

Hope everyone has a nice holiday.
