Beautiful Fish!! The fry are going to end looking real good too!!
Do you think the fry will end up being fertile males and females?
I recently bought a pair of fh/parrot hybrids from my lfs and I am trying to figure out, if and how I can/should breed them. The guy at my lfs said they should be bread like discus. Any info or advice you have would be awesome!
The fry have a 90-95% of being sterile mainly cause 50% of FHs found in the US are sterile as well as 40% of true imports being sterile as well. Combined with the genetic back ground of a parrot which have a higher sterile percentage around 70-85% the chances of the fry being fertile is very low. The other thing about parrots are that the female will lay eggs and they are actually unable to be fertilized because they lack the cell structure to do so.
prettyfish, if you are interested in breeding FHs you need to know the following:
1) These species are egg layers that like to deposit eggs onto a flat surface as a pot or rock
2) It is much easier to just have a flat piece of slate so that the parent just can pass over it to lay and fertilize
3) You need to jack the temps up by 5 degrees or so to get them to spawn when you want, unless you just wait for them to spawn on their own
4) Never startle the fish after/while they breed or there is a high chance the male or female snaps and kills their mate and eats the eggs
Those are the main things to keep in mind when breeding these beautiful fish, you have no idea how many adult I have got killed in the mating process... Guess they like it rough...
yea the best of luck to those babies cause i would love for them to reach the point to were you can send them man cause im looking for a FH and the one you have is beautiful so i think i have a strong intrest in buying them
