I probably should not be making any suggestions as I have not yet kept this fish so am not 100% sure if it would be similar to what you're looking for.
What about a brown ghost knife (apteronotus leptorhynchus)? It may be a bit smaller actually than what you'd want (have not been able to find a consistent max size) and I've heard they're shy but perhaps having the tank to itself and with time it would become less so? I imagine you may be able to hand feed it as well since most can do that with the black ones.

Why not another FH? Just curious, don't answer that if you don't want to.

For what I paid for the flowerhorn I'm not sure if I want to pay that much again. I thought about snaggingbabfew juveniles but am not sure if I want to go that route. I thought about parachromis or vieja of some kind.

A single vieja could work depending on species. Only parachromis I'd put in a 75 would be females. Most male parachromis get to big IMO. I couldn't imagine my male managuense in a 75

So I picked up a new fish yesterday. I decided to take a ride down to the shark aquarium since it is not to far from where I live. Of course I had to browse the entire store twice before I made my decision. They had a small tank with a 5" fish in it labeled red devil/flowerhorn hybrid. Nice looking fish had some fairly impressive trailing on its fins. I am not sure if it is truly hybridized with a flowerhorn due to the lack of flowerline. It does seem to have a bit of a nuchal hump though. I am at work now but now that the fish has settled in I will post some pics up. I was thoroughly impressed with the way this fish looked and it was a clear choice above the rest. Not sure if it is even a hybrid or just a nice red devil, will post pics for some opinion.
