Hi
Thanks for your kind words about the turtles & tanks.
I will watch for the pleco to make sure he does not hurt Sebe.
To those who have asked me questions on my turtles I must say I am no expert.
You can get a lot of your answers from Oddballs sticky on Fly River Turtles.
I read everything I could and asked tons of questions just like you are.
Sometimes it is more assuring when someone is answering your question instead of just reading it.
So here it goes.....
What do you feed your FRT?
I feed them a variety of foods so they do not get stuck any one thing. Also no feeder fish I am afraid of parasites introducing illness into the tanks. Mostly plant based diet - romaine or some sort of dark green lettuce, parboiled squash like zucchini. Fruits- thin slices of apples, mangoes, blue berries, kiwi. I used to give them bananas but it makes a big mess in the tanks and I think they are to sugary for them. Wafers/pellets- Hikari algae wafers, and assorted bottom feeder wafers, sometimes throw in my aquatic turtle pellets also to give them variety. Going to try peas like Oddball suggests.
Are you having trouble of other fish finishing his food?
When the turtles were smaller it was a little harder for them. I basically got rid of the fish that was eating all their food. Now that they are older and larger they can push their way to the front of the food line.
I guess they arent as smelly as sliders due to they are mainly vegetarians but still need their proteins
Wrong, all turtles smell when give a chance to. Just more water changes.
Do they need anything special besides the extra space or are they treated like the fish. Like same water levels, temp. filtration. Im interested in one but would like some info.
Yes they need a lot of extra care.
They need a big tank so they can swim around in and items in the tank for them to hide under to feel secure.
FRTs are totally aquatic turtle; they do not need a ramp to get out of the water.
FRTs are messy eaters and contribute a large bio load to a tank. High filtration levels are needed to keep tank clean as possible to ward disease and fungus.
Need to keep their water warm from 79 - 86° F (27.7-30° C) water temp.
Hope this helps.
If your are serious about getting a Fly River Turtle. Please be responsible and take good care of them.
