just to reiterate, this is definitely a Cuban gar...no question about it. i think one of the main areas of confusion here is that we don't often see pics of juvenile Cuban gars, and the ones that came into the US a few years back were all sub-adults and all showing the sub-adult pattern.
young Cuban gars will have some moderate pattern to them, with either dapples, striations, or blotches, much like joe's has. they basically merge together to form a darker lateral band on the fish. as you can see from his pics (great pics for a camera phone man!) the snout on this fish is very broad. there is no other gar that has a pattern like this, and by the time this Cuban reaches 12-14" it will have lost most of this pattern (my 17"+ specimens still tend to show a faint lateral stripe from time to time, and can definitely vary their coloration) and will look more like the Cuban pics you see on primitivefish.com. rest assured this is not an alligator gar, and as joe's comparison posts showed, the juveniles look quite different from each other.
