My gar attacking my redtail catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The gar has no turnaround space it has to TILT upwards to turn? Nice gar btw!

In a pinch 500g stock tub is a better option right now at any farm supply stores if you have the room. Im recommending this type of setup. But set up barriers around it to prevent them from jumping out

This was the first google hit here for your benefit not recommending any brand over other brands. I have used different brands with no issue in the past.

This is the photo of them in a tank together. About 2 weeks ago, the gar still has space so I think he is fine but if I really need to move him, I have a bigger tank that I bought just now.

STICK MAN.jpg

They were doing fine for 2-3 days but on the fourth day in the morning, I found him with some injuries.

I just took my redtail and measured him, he was about 11 cm and the gar was 15cm

The tank is way too small, the only way to prevent the attacks is getting a much larger tank so both fish can settle and claim their own territory.

This thread shows how big RTC can get, they can get absolutely massive.

Maybe you can keep some mini monsters, i'd probably go with some kind of puffer. There are puffers that are so small that can be kept in nano aquariums, they are small fish with huge personality.

Ok, thanks for the help! So will the puffers help to prevent the attacks?
No they are saying that the RTC and the gar going to outgrow your aquarium.

They suggest to either re-home the RTC to someone who has a big enough pond.

Or you could get a big pond/aquarium. However it has to be BIG.

Look at the link that Proteus sent on his post to a 500 gallon tub- this is the best option rn but in the future EVEN this is not big enough.

The main reason for attacking the RTC is probably because the gar feels he has no space.

Understand?

The situation in the video you posted, that is not yours but someone else's tank, is stable and neither gar nor RTC can swallow each other and they have been together long enough to know this. The Pangasid in the tank won't last, my prediction is. Not to downplay personality factor, fish of the same species can behave vastly different, especially because of their prior history.

The Gar may feel the RTC is a threat.

What's your basis? I'd never think that. I guess unless RTC tried swallowing the gar but even then the gar wouldn't bite but try to run away. I could be wrong and open to be taught.

I suggest you rehome one of them. The Gar and RTC will outgrow that no time especially the RTC.
With all due respect, this is not our first run in with the RTC_Keeper. He surely seems the one who learns from his own experience best of all. Let him do that and also stay on topic. No fish = no problem. No woman, no cry. I don't believe this is the point. We'll never learn anything or learn much that way. Getting rid of fish is not the answer to all fish-keeping-related problems we experience. We all started somewhere. Let the guy have his start and learn, I reckon and suggest. He doesn't want to start with pictus catfish or pink tail chalceus. Obviously. Let him start somehwere.

Both species deserve to be housed in a large Public Aquarium or a large pond.

Maybe, maybe not, but let the guy live and learn, I humbly propose.

No they are saying that the RTC and the gar going to outgrow your aquarium.

Yes, but in my humble opinion this is immaterial at the moment. This is not the question and at the moment the tank is more or less adequate sizewise.

The main reason for attacking the RTC is probably because the gar feels he has no space.
Can you substantiate this? AFAIK, gars are not territorial creatures. They can be aggressive but not for territorial reasons whatsoever. I think this is a predation motivated attack, especially if it happened in pitch black at night. Gars in general will take a swipe at anything that moves in their tank until they learn that there is no living body in their tank that they could eat. It will take time.

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter after reading and taking it all in I agree so will just step back and let the young person learn like you stated.
Thanks, bro. I suggest step back but in a healthy measure. Answer the question, but don't hammer the guy repeatedly, especially with off topic issues. I know where your heart is and it's ok for a generic, blind situation. But we know RTC-Keeper a bit. One size doesn't fit all. I myself pushed him pretty hard in his thread on his RTC being sick. Where we ended up is he went silent. Nobody wins.
Same here, you are clearly the pro here
I may know from experience why gars attack tank mates but when it comes to interpersonal relationships and those on a forum, we need all our heads together because we all have relevant experience in this matter. Thanks, bro.

Although it goes against what we stand for on MFK i've got to say thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter is spot on here. We didn't get much joy from another recent thread either regarding the same fish. Some people come for help, listen, and take the advice. Others don't. Hopefully the OP will learn by his mistakes and ultimately be successful in the hobby. But sadly an RTC and a gar may perish on the way.
