My 12" Florida gar's back is bent, It doesn't curve up like some I've seen, but his body is level until his tail, and it just droops down. He can still swim around, just not quite as well, his fins are just fine, and still has his appetite, doesn't go up around the top, he just lays on the bottom(He always does this I have no idea why, its nothing unusual) It still affects him though, it seems like he cant swing his head to the side to snap at food as easily, and it seems like swimming isn't quite as easy, but he still does it fine. It does affect his ability to get food though, he was never the best hunter, but it just seems that he can't get around as easily. I've been doing frequent water changes, with no results. Please help.

Either a broken back or high nitrates/ammonia. I have seen this diagnosed as the latter in a slew of archived threads. It is also mentioned in the stickies. A picture would help.

Also, test your water and post honest params.

When and where did you get it, how long have you had it, and a picture

that's a broken back. if the gars eating he will be fine but more than likely always look that way. He probably rammed the glass to hard, they are prone to that. does he have top cover in the tank?

I would bet my balls that oscar was the reason for this accident..gars are more or less mild mannered while oscar can be pita..

I'm with D. Wolf - my money (not my balls though) is on the Oscar spooking the gar. My Odoe pike did the same thing to 2 of my gars (a FL and a Gator gar). Sucks, but at least he's still eating!
