My gar is loosing his swimming fins.

my florida had all of his finns 50% gone when i got him. he was in with some jack dempseys in his previous tank. but within several months his fins were perfect. keep the tank temp up in the low 80's, use salt, and frequent water changes. gar have one of the fastest fin regeneration rates.

the paired fins seem to regenerate slower than the caudal fin (which regenerates faster in gars than any other fishes i have kept). get rid of the tankmates causing the problems, and slowly but surely the fins will grow back, good luck--

like i said...all the fins on mine were destroyed and within several months of care he is perfect health and shape. but def. need to loose the culprit who's doing this!

Maybe he's getting attacted when he's resting on the bottom of the tank by your goby.
