My Gar :)... please help with I.D.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
given a 8x4x4, good water, good food, peacefully stocked tank a fl/sp will go 29"+ mate. fact is 90% of hobbyist have no idea how to keep gar dosent really lend toward optimal requirements for growth hence smaller gar in captivity. raised metabolism due to hotter water in com tanks, stress from tank mates, diet, speed of water flow ext all have a huge factor to play in a fl or a sp's growth rate.

well, most of them are from "Central America" to the "South of North America" so they can stand both the cold and the heat... as long as the water not freezing, they are good !

mate u hardly have any knowledge to be commenting from state of that post in a other thread in gar section...

and Gator i seem to remember all your experiance being with alli's wasnt it? or am i thinking of someone else... anyway i stand by what i said fl / sp upto 3' is possible.

it can be possible but rarely in captive ! and I see that someone say they can reach up to 5', there is nothing to prove that!

Gravy you've been MIA too long:P

While 3' fl/sp isn't too far fetched when it comes to wild specimens, the established max "as we know it" seems to fall between the 20-24" range. Personally haven't seen anything larger than some 23-24"ers in the zoo.

Second what Ryan said, that a captive 3' fl/sp is possible, but highly improbably (heck, most cubans don't even reach this length).

london zoo have a 29er in with their bowfin.... and bolton aquarium have a couple well over 24" havent been for bout 3yrs but one had recently been donated in last time i was there that was up around the 29-32 mark. Ive got a theory on this, maybe sol will back me up. It is perfectly reasonable to get a fl up to 24-32" but none of us will do it because of our tanks, stocking dessions, water temp, and water flow. Gars in the uk come about 40% as do 100% amia's from the illeagal trade in us natives. when ever u see the larger size gars for sale in uk its from a us native keeper, with colder tanks and a much more natural shaped fish.... i dont know but we all and as for 23" meh baby i got a 23"er... and she got years on her yet! i know for fact i could blag london zoo to let me get a tape shoot with their big fl the 29" and ill get a tape shot of my big gal... if it takes me 4yrs i dont care xander ill prove over 24 is doable!

Zoos and public aquariums are not really fair examples when it comes to citing the maximum length of Florida gars in captivity. These institutions have massive aquariums for their gars, plus I would imagine that many of them acquire their gars at a larger size than the average hobbyist does. For the most part, we private fish keepers simply do not have the space and/or funds to provide our gars with such care.

But hey, I'm right there with you, man: I'd like to show that it is possible for certain gar species to exceed their typical captive lengths, but I know that it's a long shot because we can never perfectly simulate a gars natural habitat in an aquarium.

i totally get your point man. just remember im talking from a eu point of view. i dont know of any eu aquariums that have big us native displays. ive never seen a paddlefish in uk or a eu aquarium, there may b one just i havent seen it and certainly the two aquariums i mention the displays in question are not out of per-portion with a med-large mfk tanks, 500g ish i guess.

wiggles i anit been bout much sine u been a member i dont think, but seems like we should get on well: just look at it this way id rather tell people things and try and push them to achieve more in the future than we have known. and whilst ill never knock anyone for a well stocked com tank involving a gar we all know in back of or heads its not optimal conditions for gars as far as stress temp ext 90% of the time...
