Our friend caught him awhile back while he was fishing and gave him to us. He's about 12" long. I'll take more pics later once my camera is charged. This one is kind of old and the lighting is bad. Still shows his beautiful pattern though.

I say spotted gar considering that the caudal peduncle is too narrow in comparison to the body for it to be one of the other two possible species.

nice...i want to say it is a florida, but my gut says it is a spotted

It would have to be a spotted gar rather than a Florida gar unless it was released by someone considering that it was caught via fishing.

that is what i was thinking, but the possibility of a released fish is high considering the average person in the us. that is why my gut says spotted.

the same reason was used for my shortnose gar. it doesnt look like your average shortnose, but it is one.

Valid points. I highly doubt that it's a released fish, though, simply because the odds of catching a released gar are pretty low in comparison to a catching a native gar.

i doubt it to. it would be like getting a xanthic or black gar, almost impossible.

i don't know if you remember my shortnose or not, but it has pattern all the way through it. so there was some doubts on it being a true shortnose, but it was wild caught from my area. all we have is shortnose and longnoses here. i showed a vid of the local population and there were simmilar fish in the vid as my shortnose.

Ya, I remember that shortnose gar of yours; that one actually reminded me to double-check to see if this one might actually be a shortnose gar or longnose gar.

the snout on this fish does seem long, but it isn't a lng for sure. i was thinking the fins were too long for shortnose and (though we both know pattern means little for some gars) the spots seem to large to be a shortnose. i have seen some spotted that look like my shortnose(the newer ones caught in texas for example more specifically the larger one) just how i came up with spotted/florida with my official answer of spotted.

that shortnose of mine is the calmest and most aggressive gar i have. my cuban doesn't even show the same aggression as that shorty. it is almost always rubbing up on another gar in the tank, makes me think it is a male and my floridas are females from how it goes about it. i'll never know though.
