My gar

Very cool gar, but I wouldn't mention where you got it and/or where you live as that species isn't legal to possess in Missouri.

Post this in the "Gars & Bowfins" sub-forum if you want it to be ID'ed.

It's completely legal to possess here, according to the regulations and also more than one person at the DNR and the head of the fisheries department (who know I have it because I told them). They even looked up the rules in their big book for me just to be sure.
I actually PM'd you not long ago about the gar legality thread being wrong on that account, but I guess the moderators never updated it. All species of gar are legal to possess in Missouri, including wildcaught fish, as long as they are taken in accordance to local fishing regulations, except for alligators which you must have proof of purchase for.

nice...i want to say it is a florida, but my gut says it is a spotted

Florida gar don't range into Missouri, and it was caught out of the black river near Poplar Bluff. This is actually what most of the spotteds in this region look like, so there's absolutely zero reason to suspect a released fish, especially since no one around here sells florida gar. The closest I've ever seen them offered is in St. Louis which is nearly 3 hours away.

Next time I go out fishing I'll get some pictures of several. This fish is a standard spotted for around here, and gars in the U.S. vary drastically from region to region, so you can't go by what the pictures on google or the fish in your locality look like.
While I'm no gar expert, the only other fish it could be is a longnose, and the longnose around here are pretty standard grey with no pattern, or just some spots near the tail once they reach the size of mine, and they have a much longer snout.

Not that I have a problem with him if he's a longnose either. Doesn't change the fact that he's pretty, interesting, and personable. Or that he bites me if I stick my hand in the tank without food :\. He seems to have no problem being in a tank. It only took about 3 days for him to start following us around and eating.

That gar is absolutely beautiful. I would LOVE to have one like that to help round out my native collection!

Thanks for your comments.

Sorry I took so long to post back. Been boating and travelling and got distracted. :p

We went night fishing about a month ago on a portion of black river, and there were hundreds of gar in several spots. I at first thought there was some kind of trash or leaves floating on the water, til we shined our spotlight out there, and it was all gar, every few feet. They were extremely prolific in this area. Most of them looked like mine, and some were pretty large. Unfortunately this was at the height of the huge mayfly hatch (we had a huge layer of them in our boat afterward, ew), so nothing but the catfish were hungry and the gar barely noticed my lure. I'll try get out some night with my good camera and to get a pic before summers end, and I'd like to catch a couple more to bring home.
