I had to get rid of a lot of my fish and as I was selling all 5 of my grammodes I decided to keep the largest male. He used to have a bunch of tank mates now he's got a whole 55gallon to himself. The problem is I cannot get any interaction out of him.. I was trying to get some pictures of him earlier and he was hiding all over the tank. This is the best I could do LOL.

any suggestions on how to turn him into a glass banger? I thought about putting him in a 29gallon in my living room with nothing to hide in. Good or bad idea?

You can try adding a background (dark color/black), gravel (natural), plastic plants (natural/add weight at the bottom so that it won't float), and maybe a couple of convicts. I would leave him in the 55 gallon tank. Just aqua scape the tank to look more natural. Feed him a few rosy reds every now and then, and worms. In other words make him hunt... Just my opinion...

i've had this happen before. you can either give it alot of time for the grammy to get used to being the only fish in the tank, or get a few decent sized african hybrids or convicts that are too big to eat whole, so he has something to chase.

it's worked for me in the past with my dovii

Great looking fish. Sorry you had to downsize. I've never had a Grammodes but have always heard they were really shy. I would try giving it something to chase in the tank. Some giant danio's or some a male con.

Heh sounds a lil like mine but he now comes out to see what's going on when i enter the room, after i initially startle him. There was a time he wouldn't be so afraid of me, but he's getting more and more used to me watching him. Since i've kept him somewhat alone in a 55g I've tried;

Banjo Catfish, was fine for awhile until i left for vacation and found one half eaten and another being thrashed on by said Grammodes.

SAE's, Aus Rainbowfish i thought would be too fast, they were until lights out when 2 would disappear in a night. Both species were just big enough not to be eaten whole, it wasn't enough he like to outright kill. I hardly ever give feeders, the ones i do are home bred or quarrantined.

Speedy fish work until the lights go out.

Currently in the 55g with my grammodes are;

2xClown Pleco's and 1 Striped Raphael Catfish. I've seen him curious about all of them but they all hide well, are fairly armored, and so far smart enough to stay out my Grammodes way lol.

I may try convicts again, but I had one convict before and she got seriously thrashed. Good luck in whatever you try, keep us updated.

Agreed with adding a pair of convicts and a pair of giant danios as dithers..., he will come right out of his shyness, having other fish swimming around makes them forget about being shy.

Great pix of him! Hes got awesome looking colors.

I would not remove everything in the tank. I would place only one hide-out in the tank for him. Remember, you just removed 5 of his tank mates! Probably a bit freaked out.

Living rooms are a great place to break a fish of hiding. So much inner action that he eventually will get used to it. I would still have one hide-out for him though. Its like a security blanket.

get him a female, and give him chance to settle, he is probably stressed and wonders where tank mates have gone..

give him time.

the background is black, I have natural looking sand, and I would never feed my fish feeders.

I was thinking I'd leave the sponge filter in there LOL. That's it.

Tankmates haven't seemed to do anything for him either. He was shy before. When I turn on his light hes one of those fish that just hits the dirt and hides under the first thing he sees. I think he's going into a 29gallon with nothing to hide in accept for the sponge filter.

I've had a couple of fish like this before. I always just put 1 thing in their tank for them to hide in. Eventually they quit and start to come out.

Sponge filter will work! Nice and soft to the touch! LOL
