would this be any better to decipher gender?

Yeah, he likes like a male to me.

I had one that was about 6-6.5" when I sold it... it really was never skittish or afraid of any of the fish I had him with, even the regular male Jack Dempsey that ran the tank (The Dempsey was relentless on several tank mates including a Manny of equal size). So I really think it comes down to personality and size more than sex. I've got a couple female fish that can hang with the boys in the temperament department.
