Hi guys. I have a 2.5 inch male haiti in a 55 gallon tank. Before I bought this fish I did research on him. A lot of people said that Odo's are really nasty. "Watch out because they will dominate your tank" and "wow, what aggressive fish they are".

After purchasing this fish I have seen more and more posts on how they are not as aggressive as people stated and that really only nasty to their own species. I understand that aggression depends on an individual fish but can any one help me with this question?

I am looking for a real badass fish to keep as a wet pet. I do not have the luxuries of a 125 or bigger so I am limited. Any comments would be great.

midas?
never met one that would back down.
heck if you were in the same city as me id give you one for free.

Haitiensis are aggressive, but they aren't very fast growers. I think when people talk about them being nasty is when large adults are housed with other species in large (200g+) aquariums. I would imagine the number of people that have the ability to properly test this is probably very small. Conspefic aggression is very high.

Both of my 8-9" odo are quite outgoing and will be major glass bangers as they gain more size.

If you can't eventually provide a 125gal or larger I would suggest that you start looking for something else. Good thinking :) For a single wet pet for a 55g, I'd look at a GT or maybe a carpintis. First option would be for a male istlanum, but you'll have a hard time tracking one down!

It will outgrow the 55, although I don't know how quickly.

Red Tiger Mota would do well in your tank!

I have never seen a male odo in a community setting. If someone has one (picture) of a male hait in a cichlid community please post. I ain't talking about cichlidscene's haitm in the 180 with clown loaches either. Has to be other cichlids.

My male hait is a nice fish, very personable, but doesn't attack me. Those that do attack are my trimac, my istlanum, and my dovii. Of those, the istlanum is the best for the 55 gallon.

I'll get some pics up tomorow. I dont know the sex but I have 6 2-3"ers living with umbees and ebjds, constant chasing, no injuries or deaths, .. so far.

I think DO meant he hadn't seen an adult male in a cichlid community tank. HUGE difference between juvenile fish and adults!

:iagree: yeah, no kidding..lol..let those fish get to 6-8" and we'll see how well they get along. hope you have the means to split those fish up eventually. I'd keep a very close eye on the EBJD cause they are gonna most likely grow slower than the others and they're no where near the same aggression level as the Black Nasty or the Blue Freckled Monster (are those 2 of the coolest fish names or what? lol :D )

**side note...I think if I could choose any 3 species to keep it would probably be the Red Terror, Blue Freckled Monster and Black Nasty just cause they have the coolest names...I'd want to keep Midas too though but I'd call them Red Devils just cause it sounds better
