my home made trickle filter, but a few ????

If you seal the sump it could be possible, but then you wouldn't have proper aeration. Two identical pumps never are, algae builds up on the impeller of one or garbage wears one down faster than the other, so in time it will ever overflow or starve the filter. If you want to try it, just know to keep an eye on it. Maybe even set it in a overflow tub.

so would it be better to make a ubend 2" pipe over flow into the bucket, and have the bin sat in another tub with the pump there??? so im only running the one pump??

more like a traditional sump?????

like this???

That would give you a little more breathing room. I just meant to put yours in a larger pan in case it overflowed.

cheers dr joe,

i read through all the 58 pages of the diy pvc sump, so i mite make one of them, only prob is my pipe is 2" waste pie, now i know this is on the large side. but its it possible to still get it going?

also i understand how it syphons and what the check valve does, but how does it restart? also is the check valve closed untill you want the air out (manually) or does it vent automatically?

im going to put my bin in a large tub under the tank now, and have the pump in the new tub, hopefully even though the outlet is on the side of the the bin, it should still have enough return to keep water in the tub/bin

i should be able to added a good few gallons to the total tank area this way

cheers in advance

yeah-sumps in

made my pipe work at dinner, used 1 1/4" pipe, with push fit ends, then as i couldn't get hold of a chcek valve i used the valve off a car innertube, (work in the car trade) tested it at dinner and it worked, so got home, put my 80litre tub under the tank, cut the top off the bin, to the same level. added more fine floss to the filter.

so i tried to get it primed, but i had a small air leak, once that was sorted it worked perfectly, i had to turn the pump down a little as it was pumping a bit quicker than the sump would fill, i tried turning the power off, and the pump started syphoning, so istarted to think i needed a one way valve, doh then i realised i had the pump return pipe to far into the tank, and that once the water gets to a certain point the syphon is lost, panic over haha

so now i have about 45 litres in the sump, this now covers 30-40% of the media in the bin, i need to make a better trickle plate as the water is only doing a 6"diametr circle really,

into the sump i also added my uv filter, then checked the levels, and marked it, all is working well and staying where it should be

pics in the morning
