I just picked these guys up from a craigslist ad.
I should also put that where I live quality fish stores are few and far between so I opted to pick up these "red terrors" even though clearly the male is either a super low grade festae or some hybrid and the female is a flowerhorn or some other such hybrid .
Where I got them from the tank water was ORANGE not yellow but friggin orange , there was no wood just some dumb castles and a bunch of debris it was gross so I took these "red terrors" half way to rescue them from the trailer park they were residing and they have been in my tank for 4 days on the fourth day they spawned, who knew clean water and quality food could instigate such a quick response but im hoping to grow out some of the fry and see what they look like.

anyways long story short I dunno what they are 100% but i guess were having babies
they are currently being housed in a 55 gal which was supposed to be a pit stop until i finish the plumbing on my new 240 gallon sa/ca / hybrid tank, looks like they are gonna be staying in here for a bit.
enough chit chat. here is the vid of mom and pops and the fresh batch.

if anyone has any thoughts on the possibility of an id please feel free to post up some maybes , granted its all speculation but any input would be appreciated

my issue with the Male is that he has the Y bar but he also has a huge tail spot, and he has a split in the top fin weather it is an old injury that has healed like that or what i dunno but it isn't helping with the id'ing aspect of things, the male is incredibly aggressive even before the eggs came he has bit me , attacks the glass even when your like 4 feet from the tank.. and she is very reclusive and is very submissive to him

I dunno any thoughts on what potential fry may look like would be cool too.

Very interesting. I am here to learn more about fish, especially cichlids. So, I am definitely not the best but it looks like urophthalmus (commonly sold as red terrors). Though maybe hybrid urophthalmus. Big eyes, big tail spot, and number of bars....

Awesome that you saved them. I would have loved to picked them up.

Definitely people here who can help!

That "y" bar really is confusing. She very different too. How long have the eggs been incubating?

They laid them last night say 7 pm-ish, my intent was to vid the spawning but i missed it, I am pretty sure she is a flowerhorn of somesort she has the flower spot and some standard fh stuff but she has some weird yellow/red i dont know if she is emulating his colours or maybe her coloration could be due to her awful diet (koi sticks) from walmart and her disgusting water quality before but now she is on bloodworms (hikari) and market prawns and suplimented with worms/crickets i hire my children to catch. I am alos pretty dilligent with water changes so hopefully she will improve. any thoughts on the males top fin. Is it 2 fins or one damaged from a while ago?

also im open to any thoughts on what he may be, your right his y bar is pretty mangled and the barring is pretty irregular , but he is pretty yellow also and has a super red throat and i have seen mayans before and they were alot more burgandy all over than he is.

whatever the case maybe I hope some fry turn out because they can only be more oddly shaped / coloured than the parents.

They are definitely not festae, but they appear to be Mayan cichlids to me. Both species tend to be known as red terrors though.
