My hybrid something something... Thoughts?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Last night I decided to move the hybrid and the texas into the 30 gallon on their own as they've been really aggressive and restless with the other fish. We'll see what happens! Any tips on breeding these guys if it works out???

They should breed on their own just like convicts. The hybrid looks small but how big is the texas? I'd say let them be and they should spawn and raise the fry fine.

it looks like what i purchased as a red texas in denver like 2 years ago.

Sounds good. I put a couple flower pots in there for em as I have had fish use them in the past and it seems to be the thing to use in the hobby. Far as size goes the texas is probably about 5" and the hybrid is close to 4" i think.

That does look similar. Mine has a bit shorter of a forehead and face like it was punched in or something. Yours seems to have more of the texas shape than mine but the pattern is definitely similar. After 2 years and it hasn't really peeled any red color though. Hmm... That's interesting. I'm a newb to the hybrid deal so I really don't know much yet.

If they do have fry, at what size should I pull the fry? I know this is a ways off, but I figured I'd ask.

Well, I put in a heater last night that will actually keep the tank warm enough, I put in a penguin 350 to actually keep the tank clean enough, and I put in a couple little 1" convicts to give the texas something to play with. So far things look like they are working much better. The texas were not very active at all before last night, but after putting in the convicts they really started coming out of their shell again. Seems like they are more interested in each other again too. They kind of lost that loving feeling when I moved them to the 30. I look forward to what the week ahead could hold for these love birds. I'll keep my fingers crossed...

They werent active because they were freezing and swimming around in their own filth.

Heaters and ample filtration is need at all times to keep a tropical fish healthy. 30gal is wayyy to small of a space for that much aggression. Cons will get mean im sure, they always do. Hope you have a 75gal sitting around around because that 30 wont last long for a growing texas.
*BTW cichlids dont play. They breed, tolerate, or kill. Thats what they do. Dither would make your fish feel more comfortable but hes not going to play with them. Maybe eat a couple.

Play... Eat... Either way it's okay. If they get eaten I'm not worry about it. They were free. If it helps them breed, that is the goal. I do have a bigger tank. I have a 55 gallon I'll be getting soon. The temp was about 74 with the smaller heater, but now it is up to 77. What temp should it be? I was thinking between upper 70's and 80.

Well, so far there is not even really a remote interest in each other. However, the last couple days I have been noticing on my female that she is developing a good bit of redish coloration around her face and stomach in between the blue pearling. Hmm... She looks like she has a bit of frayed or goofy scales that are popping up a bit almost as if she is getting beat on, which she may be as the male just chases the convicts and her around now. But as far as the female, there were some other thoughts that it could be a red texas, as that is what the pet store ordered. I don't know what the peeling process is suppose to be like if their scales get weird like that or not but she definitely seems to be changing some of her color. Let me know your thoughts.
