Hi there, I have a pet passion of mine that I was able to fulfill a few months ago at both the petland and petsmart stores here in town.

This passion is to find oddball mislabeled fish and grow them up if I can get them as babies.

At the petsmart I found these in the jack dempsy tank. I did not take any pictures when I first picked them up as they did not show well enough for any chance of an id. They had a real nice blue to the fins and a goldish copper to the body with a slight blue tint, the circle on the tail has a blue ring with a black center.

I knew they were not jd so I bought all 8 of them. I lost one of them to jumping so now I have 7. Any idea on what they are would be appreciated.

The bars on these ones will go from totally solid to fade out depending on how the fish feels, when the bars are totally solid the fish is a stunner with the way the blues show up.

At the petland I found this and another also labeled as jack dempsy. The one I knew was a red devil, so I did not take a pic but this one I am not so sure of.

I will also post up other fish for id when I get them.

1st one is a Urophthalmus (Red Terror), not to be confused with Festae which also shares the Red Terror name. The 2nd fish looks like some sore ot juvenile Amphilophus, maybe Midas or Red Devil. It could actually be a mix of both because many chain stores buy from sources that often times interbreed the two.

I paid roughly $3.50 for each fish is that a good price.

That's a great price. I usually see them go for $5 each at that size.

I agree with gruff master, Mayan and amphilophus sp.--probably a midas/rd. Very good chance the second will change color as it matures to look like your standard orange amp.

You bought 8 of them??? They will grow to 14" each...

Yes I bought all 8 of them!!!!!!!

I also have big tanks and right now they are from 3 inch to 5 inch in size and are in a 150g. I have sitting behind me an empty 10 ft 300g that I am about to repair and add to my tanks.

I also buy and sell fish, and thought from the look of these things that they were most definitely not jack dempsy. I was actually in a friend of mine's fish room and he has 6 tanks lining the walls of his basement fish room ranging from 200-650g and he has a full grown male and would be interested in a couple of these when they grow bigger. Even better he raises rays so I will be able to trade me some fish for a ray or two :headbang2

So I figured from they way they looked that it was a good investment for $3.50. I should be able to sell them for $30-$60/ fish or trade them in the days to come.

You got a great deal. I am suprised that they had Urophthalmus.

not a bad idea, buying baby oddballs in tanks at the lfs. i might have to give that a try. my lfs always have tanks with leftover oddballs they're unloading for cheap
