I don't think him being stable has anything to do with being housed with gars. He was stable long before I got gars, so that wouldn't make sense.

Good water quality, adequate tank space, good food, and tankmates that don't pester them is how mine stays stable. Even when I was transferring him between tanks (which I had to do twice), he never got unstable for even a second. Lately his golden color has really deepened and come through even better, and I guess its cuz he's finally putting on some decent size. He's at least 6, maybe 7 inches now.

nice ID

Nice IT buddy and nice gars too,it could be the pics but the tank looks a bit narrow for the gars,is it?

The tank is a standard 125g (72x18x22), so its ok for now. None of the gars are over 14-15" yet, so they should be good for a while longer. I was hoping to have the 6 shortnose gars in my outdoor pond this fall, but it got too cold before I could get the outside, so they have to overwinter indoors.

My dat won't eat anything but live feeders and fd krill. He won't take market shrimp, won't take pellets (at least as far as I've seen). A couple of the gars still aren't taken pellets yet either, but as soon as they do, I'll be phasing out feeders to a very occasional treat, so he'll have to learn to like pellets, I guess. Right now I feed Hikari Cichlid Gold, Hikari Cichlid Staple, and a third kind that I can't remember off the top of my head right now.

Nice classic IT pattern ;)
