My Indochina and new little goonch (need help with ID)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's too hard to tell. The pics are kinda far and get blurry when I zoom in on the face. Lemme try to find pics of my old LLG and I'll get pics of my HLG.

I am confident enough to say that my baby goonch's coloration is similar to your HLG and the other HLGs i have seen in the forum. However, talking about body and head shape, i am still not clear about the differences. Here are some more pictures that i just took earlier :

I notice that the quality of the photo is far from perfect and i do apologize for that. Had to use flash due to the poor lighting of the tank that i purposely set to create a more comfortable environment for the nocturnal catfishes.

Coloration is definitely not a good way to ID these guys. The HLG I pictured started off extremely light and almost completely patternless and it started to change as it grew. Even to this day it's color gets lighter and darker randomly.

It's hard to describe what to look for without really looking at them in person. Since I owned both and they were in the same tank it was easier for me to notice the differences.

Specifically towards the Indians, there's differences between the HLG and LLG. I dunno the actual anatomical names like Rob does in the write up but the main things I notice, I've had both species but currently only have HLG, is that the LLG isn't as dorsolaterally compressed as HLG and LLG has these lines on the sides of their face. I think Rib called them tubercles but I could be thinking of something else. I didn't exactly pass anatomy with flying colors haha

ah i think i get it,

so simply put, LLG has a larger hunchback, HLG is flatter from mouth to dorsal fin ?? i could be well off hahaha if im correct then i think mine is a HLG, better lower the temps a bit more.

Yep! Obviously there's other traits as well but there's a noticeable difference between the 2. I wanna say yours is HLG but it's really hard to tell for me unless you can get clearer and closer pics

Aw3s0m3 Aw3s0m3 well, i think i figured what u called the the lines on LLG face. I just saw some stripes that look a bit like neat scratches below my goonch eyes. So i can say that mine is an LLG? or do some HLG also have the stripes?

Just for motivation to all goonch keepers including me myself, here is one biggest goonch that i have ever seen in captivity. owned by one Indonesian, the goonch is an indian, HLG or LLG ? would love to hear thoughts from u guys.

Take a look at the pic of my old one. If you look right behind the snout and above the whiskers, you'll see striations goin across the face and they move up and eventually connect to the lateral line. Those are what I'm talking about

i believe these are the stripes that you were referring to, he has gotten much darker than the first time he got in

It's been exactly a month and here is the progression. I feel that he is much thicker and a bit bigger compared to the first time when he got in. Coloration has also changed a lot into much darker color. One bad thing is he has lost the beautiful thread like tail and it believe it was because of the dorado.
