Dont worry, you will work your way through it. All part of the learning curve. The most important thing you can do at this point is put in a few hours of quality research on tank maintenance. You are already off to a great start. I really love to read up on this stuff (spend a little too much time on it really). Take a look into the following topics:

1) Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle

2) Aquarium Filter Types

3) Each fish you own, have owned and have interest in owning

Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, this forum, other forums, drsfostersmith.com , bigalsonline.com and after you beef up your BS detector you will be able to find the truly knowledgeable employees at your LFS.

Good luck,

Matt

matt, you give great advice btw. Keep up the good work

Thanks for all the input, Matt... I appreciate it!

Is their any specific type of filtration you'd recommend for a 180-250 gal. tank... we're looking into that size next...

If nothing else... Any recommendations for filtration on the current 55 I have, or additives I can put into the current Whisper 70's to help keep this tank healthy till we can move up in tank size?

CrystaliZed,

I have never had a tank larger than a 125g : ( so I cannot speak from experience on this topic. Others will weigh in on various canisters and wet/drys (mostly these two) and combinations of filters. I have always been a keeper of solitary fish (meanies that live alone) so I have been happy with a canister or two on each tank. My last large predator was a 16 Hoplias Malabaricus in my 125g and I ran a Ehiem 2217 and 2213, one set up as mechanical and one set up (primarily) for biological. When I make the move to a 180g or bigger I will do an Ehiem 2260 (or 2250) combo with a mid sized wet dry.
Try browsing some of those sites I posted earlier. You will see pic, prices and descriptions for all.

Matt

BTW, Thank you "Ballinoutofcontrl". We both remember what it was like trying to wade our way through all this info : ) Feels good to have an answer sometimes!

I gave two options in an earlier post, and another MFK'er (ballinoutacontrl I think) shared my view point on purchasing a filter that would eventually go on the next tank (option "B" I believe).
Like I said, I like canisters (Eheim 2250, 2260 or Fluval FX-5 for a 150 - 180g), but by all means look at what others are doing and what is available to you. Setups can vary quite a bit so what works great for me might not be your best option.

Matt

Alright... will definitely consider all of this and look into it...
I believe the dimensions I wanna work with for a bigger tank is 96"x30"x30", around 375 gallons... the bf is a class A contractor! LOL!!

your gonna need bigger than a 375 for those fish for live

Sad...but true. Eventually the fish will either outgrow it or die without attaining a full life span. I would be (with zero research behind this btw) that a fish like the Alligator Gar can live 15 - 20 years. Perhaps more...

Anyway, CrystiliZed, WOW, thats a a monster of a tank! Hope that happens for you.

Good luck,

Matt

Damn... well guess we'll hafta throw some numbers around and see what we can come up with to work... Eventually that Gar is gonna out-grow & eat those bala sharks, so maybe a few more foot long balas would be better... Hmmm... not sure bout this Gar...
