My IT Datnoid has Zits?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Anyone?? I need some help folks! If it's an internal parasite, what's the best thing to treat that with on a datnoid?

Marine fish get a virus called lymphocystis. Freshwater fish can get it too and fish that are brackish in the wild like dats are definitely able to get it. Usually looks real bad and then just goes away. Brought on by stress so if flagtail sucking on him or water issues, fighting, anything that is a change could bring it on. Are they growing too big for system or getting crowded? Keep an eye and see what happens. You can treat with homeopathic meds to see if that helps or prazi to see if it has an effect. Keep us posted. Only way to learn for all of us is experience.

They aren't crowding, in fact, I've removed fish recently. None of the fish in the tank are full grown. The pearsei are the closest and they are about 7-8". The oscar is only about 7". They have a ton of room. The bioload is still in great shape, parameters are good. But now, he is in the only empty tank I had available, which is only 20 gallons. Luckily he isn't huge yet. Still, I don't want to keep him in the little 20 for too long. I will try some homeopathic meds.

Thanks a lot coyotethug, if you think of anything else, let me know.

I had this a few years back on one of my smaller widebars, they refered to it as the dat disease. some datnoids get it, i couldn't find a cure :X

I've just done some research on lymphocystic, that seems to fit really well. Which is good and bad. Good because most people say it will run its course and go away, but bad because the whole tank could be infected. So far no other fish show any signs, but I am super nervous.

I have had outbreaks for a time with marine fish and then never see it again. I know it can spread but doesn't seem to readily in my experience. It was always in wild caught fish and never in cb fish, I have worked in lfs for years and public aquaria a couple of times so I have come in contact with a lot of cases of this.

Did you move fish out before or after the outbreak? If before it could have been the trigger. Moving out even one individual in territorial tanks can reset the hierarchy and cause stress. Sorry didn't mean to suggest you were not properly taking care of your fish just trying to find the trigger.

Keep the water clean and keep him eating well and it will go away if it is lymphocystis.

I took a couple fish out a couple weeks before. I think the trigger must have been when I housed a few fish for a few days while my friend switched his tank week before last. I'm sure that was stressful. And it was a few days after that it started showing up.

Right now the datnoid is in my hospital tank. Water is clean and I have been doing 25% wc every day. He isn't eating very well. Normally he will eat 6-10 pieces of talapia (1/2" cubes) but for the last 3 days he will only eat 2 then spits the rest out.

He eats talapia and massivore pellets. I havent fed him live fish in months so it couldn't be from food. I actually took pictures into my fish store and the guy there didn't know what it was. Sorry about your arrowana!
