well i heard temp determins genders in fish. is thattrue or not?

I've heard breeders of some species suggest that temperature affects gender... or PH affects gender... but I do not think this applies to Cichlids in general. I've not found PH nor temp to affect gender in Dempseys (although I've not extensively experimented with the idea either).

But the OP is buying the Dempseys, not breeding their own, so the OP's temp/PH wouldn't matter... the breeder/supplier's would...

Just my guess because they are a little young, but IMO top is male and bottom is female.

Based on the two pics provided, I couldn't say for sure... but if I had to guess I would agree with DJ Dlemma...

not quite old enough i think but if you wait any longer you are bound to get a pir or a sure male and female, before 4.5". gl. just give them some more time, btw they look amazing.

what about the fins being longer and pointy on males and more curved on females? is that a good rule or can females have pointy fins also ?

Fin shape of Dempseys suggesting gender is complete hogwash...

A very dominant Dempsey is likely to have pointy fins regardless of gender, but most big strong dominant Dempseys are males. The pointy fins are much more a result of Dominance than it is a suggestion of gender.

I have a pair wherre both male and female are impressive fish and both have very pointy fins... consequencly both males & females of their offspring tend to have well shaped pointy fins.

I have also been growing out many broods of Dempseys in the process of breeding Blue Dempseys and I have seen just as many pointy finned fish turn out to be female as I have seen turn out to be male. I've also seen a trend that fish with pointy fins seem to produce more fish with pointy fins...

I cannot state this as fact... but I am completely convinced that pointy fins are much more of a locale characteristic and has absolutely nothing to do with gender.

might be, but i wouldnt say it has absolutly nothing to do with gender. Its a fact on african cichlids for example.

You're probably right about the Africans, I don't know too much about that side of things... I was only speaking in regards too Dempseys...

:iagree: With JD's, sexing is mostly in speckling on the gillplate. When yours get bigger, you will notice it more.
