my jack dempsey is acting weird

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This thread is actually 7 years old. Your JD looks great though. What size tank is he in and what is he with. I've seen several other fish species "shake their heads" including my JD when I had him.

Considering how old this thread is, I appreciate your response! I was considering starting a new thread perhaps?
At any rate, the JD is in a 40 gallon (breeder dimensions) tank. It's running 2 HOB filters (each rated for 50 gallons). As far as tank mates are concerned there are only 2 others. 1 juvenile true festae (growing up in this tank of course) and a hybrid syno. catfish that is among the smaller species, it's a angelicus x eupterus hybrid. So both of these 2 other tank mates are well shy of the 4 inch mark, my JD doesn't pay them any attention at all. Is the tank too small for my JD you think?

You'll get better responses making your own thread. If you have the means I strongly recommend upgrading tanks. 40 breeders make fantastic hold, grow out and smaller fish tanks, but they aren't really suitable for life for larger fish.

So I figured I'd just give a quick update. I was able to grab a 60 gallon tank yesterday at a real good price. So I did a 'jump' start on that tank using my other 3 established tanks. Now the JD is in the 60 gallon with the red terror and virtually all 'head shaking' & 'twitching' behavior has stopped. Very relieved as this is my oldest fish to date! Now all I have to do is continue my battle to break him onto pellets...I've never had a fish that I was afraid would actually starve itself to death before eating a pellet.... Here's some updated pics just so you can see what I've got done:

It's hard. You can try soaking pellets in worm water.
