Good water quality is important for him to grow fast
To beef him up use a good pellet Cichlid gold works also Give him Worms, Shrimp and Krill to help make him really colorful
I would say it is a male based on its jaw structure the amount of spangles it has and the amount of color it has under its jaw Looking at there gill plate is usually an eazy way to tell its gender Females will have a full blue beard under there mouths with very little areas that are plane colored Males will usually have little color under there mouths but they can still have plenty of color they will either have no color on there gill plates or Spots on there gill plates
That way of sexing the fish is most accurate when the fish are mature, young JDs haven't fully developed there color so it is dificult to tell there sex by looking at there gill plates but you can look at the Number of spangles they have males will start to bevelope there spangles earlier then females so when young if it has alot of color on its body then its most likely a male
