My Jaguar had a heart attack (for real I think)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for all the support guys. I tested water and the parameters were fine.

The fish is in a 45 gallon tank which I know is a bit small.

But the tank is filtered with 2 Aqua Clear 110's and a Aqua Clear Power Head 70 for air.

I never ever miss a water change/gravel vac since I had this fish.

I do 50% changes every 2-days, the water that is replaced is always mixed first with Prime water conditioner before its added to the tank of course its always very close in temp.

I'm starting to come to conclusion that fish kept alone seem to become more and more shy overtime, perhaps its just not natural to be kept constantly alone.

My green terror always acts this way, and it to was always kept by itself since a baby.

All my electric outlets are new 3-prong grounded outlets that we had re-done a few years back.

I just think the fish got spooked, and because the tank is quite small she hurt herself badly.

Or perhaps she is dying of old age? How long do these fish live? I purchased her as a wildcaught adult from Rapps, she is around 13 inches from head to tip of the tail.

She is still acting badly and I feel sorry for this fish. I hope it either comes around quickly or just dies. Right now I don't even want to watch TV in the room, I get sick looking at the fish doing head stands in the water.

45! Ooh man. What are the dimensions of the tank? I doubt being kept solo had anything to do with it. I have kept many fish solo, (a male jag being one) and it never seemed to have any ill affects on them. If anything they were shy sometimes, but that depends of course on the fish. Judging by the pic in your avatar, the fish didn't die of old age. Old age isn't something they struggle with, they just slowly become lethargic, and one day, they just don't wake up. How is she doing now?

well, imo your fish doesn't look bigger than 10"-11", but anyways, i don't belive it was a heart attack that your fish suffered, but i really can't tell you what did with the info at hand, what are your water parmeters?

:( i don't think its electrical, all appliances should come with a C.P.C. i don't think it would be a heart attack either.
(i am just suggesting here) have you checked the gills?? i know that when some fish have gill infections that they suffer from a lack of oxygen from there Gills dissapearing and then just do what you have said. maybe it is an internal infection?? or possiblely the first spook where it banged its head is what has caused the damage/

there are quite few possibilies, sorry if it seems i have opened a can of worms but i have tried to eliminate two for.

sorry to hear the bad luck mate. :(

13"s?!? in a 45. Unless the fish is 10 years old I doubt it died of old age. 50% water change every 2 days is too much. 20% weekly changes are recommended if anything.

:screwy:

Swimming bladder problem? I had a big festae died the same way. One of my blackbelts had same problem, and I treated it with anti-bacteria medicine. It was alived and eating but it had problem to prop itself up and it swimmed frantically in circle or in all dirctions especially when it got spooked.

No such thing as too much water changes as long as your water is being conditioned correctly.

I totally agree, "there is no suck thing as too much water changes". The more the better, only if your fish is used to huge waterchanges.
I do 85% to 90% weekly waterchanges on all my tanks w/ water conditioner of course.

I believe your fish rammed the tank so hard and broke its spine or something. Its common for large CA fish ramming tanks with full force. Hey, look at the bright side. You can get a male jag now with much, much better patterns and attitude. If you are in Vegas. Ill have some 4" males I could give you.:naughty:

50% water changes every other day is fine if the water is conditioned. (but over-doing it)

A 13" jag in a 45 gallon tank didn't have a heart attack...HE COMMITED SUICIDE! :rip

The good news is that now you have an opportunity to get a proper sized fish for a 45. Good luck!
