Alright so now that this Jaguar I raised from a fry of less then an inch is starting to show his true colors, I realize that he is no Jaguar but a Dovii. I bought him a lfs as a jaguar with a tank of maybe 75 or so others. Ive had enough trouble trying to save up for a 75 for a "Jaguar" nm the space or money for a 180+ for a Dovii. Now im torn to get rid of this fish or try to house it as best as I can. I really really like this fish and want it to grow into old age under my care. From your guys experience how big do these fish really grow in a home aquarium, by the blues and high coloring im thinking this Dovii is male.

btw i realized this was no jaguar when it reached 5+ inches and still only had the black circles down side no where near a jaguar pattern. I did a lot of research last night and am 100% sure its a dovii, i have no camera.

thanks

well since you can't post a pic, well take your word for it, generally in home aquaria male dovii don't reach there full potential of 30" but females do reach there full potential. i have seen some stunning blue coloration on femlaes, but it is more prominant in males.

males get to about 20" max in captivity
and females to 16"

so i would reccomend that if there is no way you can possible keep the fish, try to sell it to someone if you can. because i really can't justify saying, keep the fish and whatever happens, happens.

I think u could do a good trade in with him at the lfs it's not your fault it got screwed up so i think that would justify sending him back but u could enjoy being a dovii owner til he gets about 10" then he needs a bigger house. If u are willing to ship i bet u could get top dollar for him right here on M.F.K. there are dovii freaks with monster tanks and money around here.

Where I work, we get trades for jaguars almost weekly. Most are far from stunning though. I large dovii is much harder to come by. I say hold onto it until is is as large as it can be, while still having a fair amount of space in the 75. People who know what a dovii is and can properly house one are more likely to have a large tank with already large fish. -Andrew
