Sucks for evaporation, but is awesome for keeping the fish in. Go with egg crate. Great stuff, can be cut to fit SNUGGLY into the groove on most tanks. Then just place a few weights on it for added support. Also allows for more light from your lights to go through, and you can just feed through the crate. So only time you have to take it off is for water changes. Just a thought. All my tanks are this way.

if thats the case, then they sell the little plastic strips that go in this area. they cost a few bucks for a long piece. of you could put any piece of plastic..

i doubt a thin piece of plastic is going to prevent a fish from flying right through it.
i'd probably just put a large piece of drift wood over the exposed spots.
or if you have multiple filters on the tank to i'd space out the water intakes and outlets.
