i bought a new jd at the lfs an i got it home an put it in the piranha tank an they got along great. now he is starting to ack like them an is being skiddish an hiding. he was all perky at the store. were did my jd go?

you put a JD in a "piranha tank", and you expect it to be happy about that? I'd be surprised if it wasn't hiding

how big is the JD and how big are the other fish in the tank?

the jd is bout 1-2 inches bigger. he is like 5 inches with the biggest piranha bein 3. its only temporary tho' the end of this month i will redo my tank room an he will be out of that tank.

no its like wen im away from the tank he will come out an swim with the piranhas he ther gettin along fine. but wen someone approches the tank. he will swim away an hide like they do. is he adapting ther habits?

umm .. its hard to believe that the piranhas dont tear him apart ... but you do know there going to sooner or later ... you might not have a month .. and i have jags that are really skiddish when im around the tank ... unless i am feeding them .. its just kinda how they are .. my dats where the same way for the first month or so .. now they come out and watch me .. and i do nothing diffrent between the 2 tanks...

I don’t know a whole lot about Piranhas… but I know enough to know their reputation is grossly exaggerated.

I’ve never known anyone who kept Piranhas in a healthy aquarium and on a healthy diet that had ruthlessly aggressive fish. That is not to say Cichlids and Piranhas are good tank mates for one another…

Yes, I do believe that your Dempsey is learning the habits of your Piranhas. The theory of ‘dither fish’ is that when hiding Cichlids see the dithers swimming in open water not being harmed, it shows the Cichlids it is safe to come out… Well doesn’t it make sense the opposite lesson will also be learned?

I have a freind who had piranhas and he was all hopped up on them because of their reputation, when he finally got them home he realized that they arent nearly as aggressive as people make them out to be. He ended up having to seriously injure the fish or food he was trying to feed them otherwise they wouldnt go after it.

Bye Bye JD. I would hide too if I was it.
