Guess I will get some today!!! Which foods do you get from kensfish.com?

I use growth meal for my fry, sinking growth pellets as staple for my SA/CA's, and Kens Super soft krill(SA/CA also) and Hikari Gold floaters for my FH's currently.

I feed a little bit of everything from kensfish. Variety is key. I usually spend about $100-125 every time I do a order with him which is usually like 7-8 pounds of different food. My favorite food from kensfish is the "soft and moist with krill" sinking pellets. All my flowerhorns love that stuff and it brings out their reds nicely. I also feed the no-carb pellets to my fry. It's said to make them less aggressive and it's healthy for them and good for their growth.

here is my staple for a few of my larger flowerhorns. The big yellow container is "hai feng super color"

I feed my FH Dainichi "ultimate krill" (I believe it's called). He also gets either night crawlers/eartherworms or a treat from my guppy/platy tank once a day.

My Amphilophus Hogaboomorum gets Dainichi "color supreme". He loves it.

In my opinion Dainichi makes the best cichlid food.

Danichi is good but doesn't offer much for new world cichlids or flowerhorns. It's a african cichlid based food. The food is good but the pellets are too small. Fish will eat it but once they're 3"+ they usually want bigger pellets.

The only difference between food marketed for new world cichlids, flowerhorns, and african cichlids, is the size of the pellet. If that's what you were stating Cam, I concur.

The other day someone PM'd me asking the following;

I just purchased a FH (3") and was wondering if I had to buy the ultra expensive food on line. I have a 10" Red Devil and feed her Hikari Gold, would that be good enough? what do you reccomend?

THANKS

Jeremy

My response;

Hey Jeremy,

No, you don't need to purchase any of the specialty FH foods, some of them aren't even very good. If you are happy with the results you are getting with Hikari Gold, then just keep feeding that.

Personally I feed New Life Spectrum to all of my fish, including my FH, but I also have a vested interest in the product.

I agree with the size of the pellet thing but new worlds and old worlds have different diets. The most important thing to know is that any quality cichlid pellet is also a good staple for a flowerhorn.

There is no difference whatsoever between the dietary requirements of an old world cichlid, and a new world cichlid. All cichlids require the exact same amino acids, lipids, vitamins & minerals. While the nutrient levels can vary somewhat, especially if one considers the growth stages of the fish, the rest simply boils down to marketing.

The last time I looked at a bottle of Hai Feng, the main ingredient was wheat - what cichlid eats carbohydrates as its main staple in the wild?

If you take a close look at the foods marketed for FH, they are no different than any other pellet that's marketed for cichlids.

Fish Meal, Shrimp Meal, Soybean Meal, Multivitamins and Organic Minerals.

Fish Meal, Shrimp Meal, Spirulina, astaxanthin, Fish Oil, Soybean Meal, Corn Meal, Wheat Flour, Wheat Germ, Lecithin, Yeast, Multi Vitamins, Minerals

A well known all purpose pellet;

Krill Meal, Herring Meal, Wheat Flour, Squid Meal, Algae Meal, Soybean Isolate, Beta Carotene, Spirulina, Garlic, Vegetable and Fruit Extract,
Vitamins & Minerals.

I feed the same pellets (just different sizes) to every fish that I own, and I've been doing that for the past decade. New world, old world, FH, you name it. Carnivore, omnivores, and herbivores, with all 3 groups swimming in the same tank, eating the exact same pellets.

I find that most hobbyists get so hung up on percentages found on the label, they fail to take a closer look to see exactly what those percentages are made up from. The quality of the protein, is far more important than the quantity.
