Please read that... hillstream loaches often appear to do OK in community tanks without any sort of special requirements, but usually die within the space of a year. I think the goal of a fish keeper should be to provide the optimum habitat to a fish anyway. These fish are all wild caught to my knowledge and come from fast flowing streams in the hills of China.
Do I need to explain why your tank is overstocked and undersized? It's tiny. Setting up my hillstream loach biotope, for just a half dozen loaches, I didn't consider anything less than a 20 gallon long. Fish need room to move too, aside from water quality issues. I'm not trying to be a jerk at all, just sharing my knowledge base and experience from keeping these fish as a hobbyist and caring for/selling them when working in the industry.
A 7 gallon tank in my opinion is only suitable for a betta.

I appreciate the info that you post. A bigger tank is always better no matter what kind of fish we're keeping, however no matter what we do, we can never mimic their natural habitat. I look through lots of info even before I bought the fish, and as you mentioned they need to be in at least 20g. I dont disagree with that. But that's only determined by people judgement.
If I have only 1 hillstream loaches, then why would I need a 20 g tank???? Just because I have 4 of them it does not mean that I need a bigger tank than what I hv atm.
As I said early, I reduced the stock in the tank, and yet for today I reduce the stock again which now remain only 4 hillstream loaches. There are more than enough filter and aerator in the tank. And they eat just fine. Yet, I always look after the water quality as I like clean and clear water in my tank.
If I was to add more of them, then I will move the whole into a bigger tank which I already have. Without people telling others what to do, I know how to keep the fish. Just because there are information available out there, it does not mean that you always have to follow those info to keep your fish happy. Btw, I hate bettas..

It's your call.

Bettas are incredibly underappreciated fish.

Have fun with your 7 gallon.

well as usual people would rather make fun of tank size than help. i can only be certain of brown with black stripes is commonly known as tiger snail survives freshwater breed like machine in brackish and all fish in any size tank are cool

well maybe not you inpaticular but find many overly critical responses from people on a forum that is for entertainment. i also have seen your response here and other posts and i assure i did not intend for you

You haven't been around too long as I see you have just signed up to MFK this month... we might mess around here and there, but 98% of our members give knowledgeable advice that is aimed to improve the hobby. It can be a tad elitist, I agree, but don't expect to come to MONSTER FISH KEEPERS and get hugs and high fives for over stocking a 7 gallon tank. Just sayin'.

Welcome BTW!

It takes a while to get used to the way people communicate on any forum. You'll get used to it. ^^

Personally, I think a 7 gallon is okay for bettas and ghost shrimp.
