Got a 4"-5" long ear and had a 4"-5" lmb in a 150g for about a month now and this morning my lmb is dead and looked like he was beat to death. The two have been fine and eating great any ideas for the next fish?

A 150g is a lot of space, so I'm not sure why you're longear would have killed him.

While it's possible, I think it's more likely he died and the longear went to town.

Not sure what happened feed them this morning and right before lunch the lmb was sucked up next to my filter return and beat up. Planning on going fishing this weekend. Guess I will try some more fish and see what happens. If the long ear is a tank mate killer guess he will get let go.

Dont release him, its very illegal. Just giving you the heads up in case you weren't aware.( frying him however, is completely legal lol )

Like already meantioned it is illegal to release this fish. It is also illegal in most states to keep them in tanks if they are wild caught. Best way to legaly aquire native fish is from a hatchery, or a reputable dealer.

I completely agree with not releasing aquarium fish in the wild.

One thing that always crosses my mind though is buying minnows for bait from a tackle shop. Lots of those minnies inadvertently get off the hook and into the water. Of course this isn't intended. Also, what happens with people that don't use all their minnies and throw them into the water when they are done?

I also think about how I keep minnies alive all during ice fishing season in my garage and use them as bait out in the wild. Lots of people do this.

What are your thoughts?

Fish and keep all my aquarium fish from private ponds. So laws do not apply. Thanks though for the info but that is why I stay on private waters.

I dont believe it is illegal in "most" states except for enangered species....you need to get ahold of your local state wildlife agency or Nanfa to find out the laws for Indiana or whatever state your collecting in.

I don't know about most, but I can think of a few offhand where you can't keep any wildcaught native species in aquaria without a specific permit (not just a fishing permit).

Missouri does have some of the most lenient laws regarding keeping native wildcaught species though, in that ANY fish that is caught legally with a fishing license can be kept as long as it is not considered endagered. And all Lepomis species are considered baitfish and can be attained by net (many states consider bluegill and such game fish - must be caught with rod), though there are limits on the amount of bluegill and green sunfish you can take each day (these limits are so high it wouldn't even apply to most hobbyists).
