I worked in local law enforcement for 7 years. In that time there were 4 people that I know of that the local C O's fined for keeping wild caught fish in an aquarium. 1 of those 4 people was a sheriffs deputy.

That doesn't mean it's like that in most states. Some states have stricter laws regarding keeping wildcaught natives (I know in MN it's forbidden without specific permit).

To determine it's illegal in the majority of states you would have had to review the laws for all 50 states and memorize them, and I find that quite unlikely.

MANY states allow people to keep wildcaught natives for aquarium use as long as the people catch those fish in accordance with local fishing regulations, and the species are not endagered or threatened.

The good thing about it is that its very easy to find out from your local conservation dept. or from the Nanfa website....some states like Tennessee have very harsh laws....others like Mo fairly lenient laws regarding keeping natives.

Not sure what happened feed them this morning and right before lunch the lmb was sucked up next to my filter return and beat up. Planning on going fishing this weekend. Guess I will try some more fish and see what happens. If the long ear is a tank mate killer guess he will get let go.

Just throwing this out there... (hides)

Lmb aren't that aggressive (outside of spawning).

You've got two fish in a tank at vastly different maturity levels.

A 5-6" sunfish is well into sexual maturity - Think breeding cichlids - they're going to get a bit meaner.

Even with sightlines broken up with plants/rocks/driftwood across the tank, it might just not be meant to be. Some fish just exist to beat the piss out of other fish.

If you got both of the fish out of your backyard pond on your farm, don't feel bad about letting the green go. Otherwise, local laws aren't to hard to find on dnr websites. ;)
