N. hexagonalepis is easy to pick out - of the growouts I received 2 quickly got large silver scales with 2 black lateral stripes on the caudal - but the others are difficult. At the size mine are at there is too much guesswork, as they all look morphologically similar, and the yellowish paired fins seem to be pretty common on juvie Tor. Behaviorally, N. hexagonalepis (IMO) are much "heartier" eaters and grow much faster than Tor sps. Yeah, "hearty" is relative :D; suffice to say the hexagonalepis/copper mahseer are more active, more aggressive at feeding time, and more inquisitive about possible food.

Very true. I picked out the two N. Hexagonalepis right away. Like you said the black on the caudal, round face and hearty eater is their trait. I have ten N. Hex from a previous batch in the outside pond and they break the surface everytime during feeding. These speed kings are 10" already.

I have one in the growout that is very different (slender with a pointed head) from the others so I hope it's something special. Like you said too hard to tell at this size.

I treat them identical as kois. I fact they are being fed koi food. Only difference is koi will not eat during cold temps but mahseers will. Give me some time, I will have mahseers in koi ponds all over SD.
