I have had him for 6 years in a 125 with no issues. But recently he has started to breath really heavy and for a bit he had issues with swallowing his food and keeping it down. I have checked the water prams and nothing jumps out. I have a powerhead and some air bubbles in the tank. Im not sure what the issue is. He still wants to eat but i have noticed he is not quite himself. I recently treated him with melafix because he has some hith. and that has helped. would that have something to do with his laboured breathing? Im not sure what to do at this point. Any insight on this would be super helpful

Meant *gill* function.

Also, if you think there might be a toxin that entered your system, you can add some carbon. I knew a guy that was running his tanks on sponge filters and lost a ton of fish when he painted his room with a paint sprayer. Guess the air pump sucked in the fumes and bubbled them into his tank

First thing I’d do if there’s labored breathing is to do a big water change. You could also add a bit of salt to help with osmoregulation, which helps fill function
Amazing thanks man. I did a water change last weekend but I'll do a big one tonight. And I will add some more carbon to the filter . I super appreciate the advice.

I just noticed he has a blood spot on his tail fin. I was having issues with high nitrates a few weeks ago. I cleaned my filter and did some water changes. But im thinking he might have a bacterial infection?
