I need help ASAP my male peacock is lying on the bottom of my hospital tank gasping for air. I think he might have bloat. His stomach is very big. I have the temp around 87"f and I put Melafix and salt in the tank. What should I do to save him.

Melafix isn't going to do anything for him if he has bloat.

I would water change the tank to get the melafix out of there. The melafix may be doing him more harm then good.

I've had ebjd's that have died from bloat which I believe is from feeding them too many high protien foods.

I've treated my bloated EB's with very much success doing epsom salt
bath's. Epsom salt is a natural laxative and will help with the
fish's digestive tract.

Try this... ''Dissolve 1 and a quarter cup of epsom salt into
a 10gal bucket at a temperature of 83-85 (for 10mins). Bathe the fish for 5-10 mins then removing fish and placing back into the QT tank.'' While in the salt bath, keep an eye on him/her. If you notice any strange behavior, remove him/her immediately.

6 times I have used this method that was suggested to me by a breeder and only once did the fish not survive. So I am a firm believer that the method described to me above, works very well with a fish that has bloat.

Best of luck to you and your fish. Hopefully its not too late.

If you have or can get it treat with Metronidazole (Flagyl) If he is laying on the bottom gasping for air you may be to late. The epson salt is a fine quick try. Treat your tank even if you lose him. It can kill your entire tank. Epsom Salt will make the others void their systems. Very hard to treat at the stage you say yours is. :(

whatever you do, dont use aquarium salt-if he has bloat it will kill him.

like the above posters said, epson salt and metronadizole.. best of luck to the little guy! you may also want to treat your entire tank, as bloat can be caused by bacterial or parasitic infections-there may be other fish that are infected, just not bloated out yet.

cloat works well for parasites, however it is illegal (some places you can still get it) in cali. you can also try pimafix which i think is available in cali

Did anyone notice the 87 degrees?!? Before dumping anything remotely crazy in the tank, do some water changes...if you have a filter, keep the water level lower so the filter can agitate the surface and create more oxygen.

Sometimes the best treatment is water changes.

temperature is way too high - just to tell you, warmer water keeps less oxygen (fish gasping for air) Try to keep it on 78" but dont change it all too drasticly.

I run my tanks at 85-86 degrees for years. I believe it keeps parasites to a minimum. I do have a ton of airation in the tank though. My 125 has 3 air stones and a wand, also running 3 ac's that helps with airation. Temp is always around 86. I'm going on 2 years now without one indecent in that tank.

Do I think 87 is to high? With no airation, yes. With none or little, it is very dangerous for your fish.

i have same problem in my 150 gallon my male peacock is very bloated and eyes are swollen as well hes eatin very lil but swiming around fine is the epson salt the only thing that will help
