My marble goby

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here's a weird one, I been collecting fish since 1990 and have never seen a goby over 3 inches. I was trying to guess yours at 10-12 inches.

I've thought about getting one over time but heard they can get up to 20 inches

Really? I have not seen one personally larger than that, but I have seen pics of some over the 20 inch mark, really massive fish.

^ yeah there was a guy on here who had a 15 inch water cow and the thing jumped and shattered the glass lid, thread was a while back, those have some serious power behind em when they get big

I'm sorry man I misidentified your fish. I thought it was a Water Cow Goby which is also often times referred to as Marbled Goby whose scientific name is Eleotris Picta.

You actually have a Marbled Goby whose scientific name is Oxyeleotris marmorata

They're a lot less common then the Water Cow in the hobby but also come in at smaller sizes then Water Cows, usually around 3-4 inches and around $15. Currently I believe Only Seagrest and Bluegrass carry them. At the size you've got him at I'd say he could easily be sold for $50 maybe more.

They can also hit 26 inches(usually smaller in aquaria) and are one of the largest Gobies in the world.

You should definitely hold on to him. I know they can be boring as they're not very active, which is probably the reason the family name of this group of gobies is Eleotridae(which means sleepers). Still they do make impressive specimens especially at the larger sizes. I personally would like to be able to have all three commonly available Sleepers Picta, Marmorata and Maculatus.
