My Melanurus Pair

How big are your Melanurus. I had a grow out Melanurus from Jeff Rapp at 3 inch that doesn't look like yours. Mine looks no difference from a synspillum. Yours have uniformly brown color that look like chocolate cichlid to me.

They do tend to look a lot like syns. However, his are in breeding dress. When breeding, many vieja undergo a dramatic color change.

Bill... correct me if I'm wrong, but they are more yellow than brown, no?

Hi, just for clarification, what was once called 'synspilus' is now 'melanurus (red form)' . The 'melanurus' pictures of the OP is the orange form. Actually, the orange form's coloration can be quite variable with orange/ brown/ yellow and deep blue markings, depending on mood. Here's a couple of pics of my 'orange' and 'red' forms for comparison.
