my messy oscars help !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i just dont want the poop in the middle of the tank, i just rather have it in one corner piled up so i can scoop..
That's what the powerhead on the left is up to. I mess with it to control where the pile is, and I used to put a decoration right in the spot. Worked really well until I put the java moss in there and it stuck to the decoration (great) and collected the poo (not great), so I moved it out of the way and re-directed the current to pile the poo near those rocks.

I agree a bare bottom tank will solve any poo problem you have but personally i like the look of sand or gravel in the tank. I can't remember witch Hydor model i have but they really put out allot of movement so maybe try the K3.

Best thing to do with messy Oscars is don't feed them as much feed them small amounts and they won't be so messy with their food. I've got 2 Oscars and a Rose Queen currently in a 75gal tank. If I give them enough food at once for all of them the Oscars will lose half the food they take out the gills. If I only put small amounts in until they eat all that I put in there and there's less mess. The Rose Queen seems to know that the Oscars are messy and she'll search the bottom of the tank when she wants more food than what she could find at the top of the tank.

I have 3 oscars 12''-14''. They are just messy fish, get used to it :nilly: Lots of people don't like oscars for this reason. When you have adult oscars the size of yours, reducing feeding to every second day third day. Feeding adult oscars more then once a day is not necessary.

i might try that koralai 3, darn, i miss my gravel, ever since i converted with sand, u really see the poop. i wish they had a PFS sand that is dark enough to blend in with the brown poop :irked:

For a 125, I'd shoot for one of the new Koralia Evolution 1400's. They're excellent for 6 foot tanks. While you're never going to have a spotless Oscar tank, you could also try and get them off Hikari and on to another food that doesn't create such a mess. In my experience, feeding foods like Hikari and Tetra result in very messy waste buildup. While feeding foods like NLS or Sera seem to help create more "solid" waste.

Also consider more live foods like earthworms, which compact nicely into little red turds.

ill definetely try that advise. never knew hikari was messy, i thought they were the best food in the market ! :naughty:
